“You know what, a film is just a film. What I want is for you to go to a cinema, sit in a darkness, watch it and when you leave: how are you? Are you better? Do you feel stronger? Did you get something? Or are you just the same as you were when entering the cinema? And that’s all.”-Béla Tarr (2016)

How do you film apocalyptic events? How can cinema record experiences of utter destruction? How much dread can be conveyed simply by pieces of footage? And how can audiences engage with such material and then return to the everyday present?

This month, Trembling Images‘ Club explores these questions through their Ends of a World double feature of La Soufrière-Waiting for an Inevitable Disaster (1977) and Sleep Has Her House (2017).

In the former documentary film, the New German Cinema auterist Werner Herzog and his crew investigate the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe amidst the evacuation of local residents and fears of an imminent volcanic eruption.

In contrast, the Welsh art filmmaker Scott Barley uses a combination of still photography, illustrations and iPhone shot footage of rural Scotland and Wales to produce a work of slow cinema depicting mysterious and deadly paranormal hauntings.

In these ways, the two films confront their viewers with visions of the end, of sublime landscapes on the verge of devastation at the hands of forces far beyond human control and comprehension.”
