Breath of Fresh Air Choir – Community Group of the Year

Our Breath of Fresh Air Choir is the Gregson’s flagship wellbeing project which was started in 2022. The choir was launched in 2022 by Greggie volunteer Dr Rachael Eastham in partnership with Queens Square Medical Practice in Lancaster.

Breath of Fresh Air is the Gregson’s flagship wellbeing project: a weekly choir for adults living with asthma, COPD and other breathing conditions.

We started the choir in 2022 in response to a very local need. Health data shows that respiratory health here in Bulk Ward is significantly worse than the England average. We wanted to see whether bringing together singing, breathing and community could make a difference.

And it has.

Led by Charlie Brown, who has specialist Singing for Lung Health training, the choir uses breathing-focused singing techniques to support people to manage their breathing, improve wellbeing and build confidence. But just as importantly, it brings people together, creates friendships and tackles the isolation that can come with living with a long-term health condition.

The choir has also become a gateway into the wider Gregson community, with members connecting with other activities, support and people here.

So we’re absolutely delighted that the BBC Make a Difference Awards have recognised what this wonderful group of people has created together. We also want to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to Places for People whose funding has made the choir possible for us to put on as well as choir members who donate weekly.

Fancy joining them?
The choir meets at the Gregson on Monday afternoons. No previous singing experience required! More info here or contact us on 01524 849959 (option 1) or email breathoffreshair@gregson.co.uk

And there’s another award…

Our charity sub-group Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field (affectionately known as the Gregsons’ garden) was highly commended in the Environment Award.
