Building Layout
The Gregson has 3 main levels with rooms and facilities on each as follows:
Ground Hall level – Café-bar, accessible toilet, female toilet and lift
The Hall level – the Hall, male toilet, stairs to the first floor and lift
First floor – Olive Bar/Meeting Room, Cinema, gender neutral toilet, lift and rear door access to the balcony in the Hall
Getting around in the building – step free
Step Free entry to the building
Both step free access doors only open from the inside. There is an accessible height doorbell on the main front door on Moor Gate (the purple door).Please ring this doorbell and a member of staff will meet you and open the door you want to use.
For step free access directly into the Café Bar (ground floor) from Moor Gate there is a 118cm wide door. This door is to the right of the large window as you look at the building. It opens inwards, from the inside only.
There is also an 85cm wide double door with flat access directly into the Hall Level) on Williamson Road.
Getting around in the building – step free
There is a Gregson-branded navigation sign and a black chalkboard at the bottom of the staircase on the Hall level, telling you which rooms are on which level and what is going on in each room that day. These are visible from the main front door and ground floor level.
All public rooms are clearly marked with signs on the door which indicate whether they are in use or not. Please bear in mind that sometimes these signs are not used correctly, so always check with a member of staff behind the bar, on our website, or on the blackboard to see what’s on at any time.
The Gregson Centre has a platform lift to all floors, accessed from the Ground Floor level. The lift has a safe working load of 410kg. The door is 89 cm wide and opens outwards via a touch button for 10 seconds before automatically closing. The lift is 102cm by 152cm and will typically accommodate a wheelchair user and one other person comfortably.
Once in the lift you select the button of the floor you want. You must hold this button down for the duration of the journey. There are written instructions in the lift. For any assistance, please ask the Cafe Bar team.
If you want to visit the Gregson Yarden there is step free access along an 80cm wide alleyway off Bath Street. If you are unsure where this is – please ring the accessible doorbell at the front of the building and ask a member of staff.
Getting around the building – with steps
Entry to the building with steps
The main front door on Moorgate, which is purple, opens inwards. Through this door there is stepped access only into the building. At full width this door is 108cm wide and with one side open, the door is 58cm wide. There is one 7cm step into the building.
Once inside, in front of you there are 3 steps which have visual contrasting strips on the edge of the steps which take you to the Ground Floor level. These steps are 17 cm high maximum and there is a handrail on both sides that runs the length of the steps.
Then there is a porch door which opens outwards and is 102cm wide. This is usually open during business hours in warmer months.
To reach the next level, The Hall level, there are 3 more steps which have visual contrasting strips on the edge of the steps. Each is 17cm high, and runs the full width of the corridor – 210cm. There is a handrail on one side that runs the length of the steps.
You can also access the Café Bar directly through the door from the Gregson Yarden. This door opens inwards (from the outside) with a handle and outwards (from the inside) with a push bar. The door is a double fire door 120cm wide in total. Once inside there are 2 uneven steps down into the Café-Bar which have visual contrasting strips on the edge of the steps. The largest stair tread is 20cm high and the smaller is 18cm high. There is no handrail.

The main staircase starts from the Hall Level and is 16 steps which have visual contrasting strips on the edge of the steps. Steps are 110cm wide. There is a handrail running the entire length of one side starting from the second step up, and banister on the other. Each stair is 18.5cm high. There are 2 steps up from the Hall floor level, a small landing, followed by 4 more stairs up to First Floor Level. All steps on the staircase have visual contrasting strips.
Toilets & Changing
There is an Accessible toilet and baby change located on the Ground Floor level. To find the accessible toilet, head towards the lift and female toilet and turn left. The door opens outwards manually and is 77cm wide.
This self-contained room has a toilet with a handrail along one side and lever hold on the other side; a low sink (68cm from the ground); and fold down table/baby change. There is a moveable toilet step. There are also 2 hooks on the back of the door (1 seated and one average standing height), a sealed waste bin (for nappies and period waste), emergency pull cord and rotate to (un)lock handle.
The Female toilet is also located on the Ground Floor level. The door opens inwards and is 70cm wide. Once inside there are 2 pedestal sinks and 3 cubicles with doors that open inwards. There are period waste bins in each cubicle. There is a full length mirror in this toilet. There is a hook on the inside of each cubicle door.
The Male toilet is located on the Hall Level through a door that opens outwards and is 75cm wide. There is 1 toilet cubicle, 3 urinals and three shared sinks. There is a hook on the inside of the cubicle door.
There is a toilet for everyone, a gender neutral toilet on the First Floor level. This toilet has an inward opening door that is 67cm at the widest point. Inside there are 2 cubicles with doors 65cm and 63 cm respectively at their widest point. There is one sink attached to the wall and a full length mirror. There are period waste bins in each cubicle. There is a hook on the inside of each cubicle door.
