Dark skies are important for nature, cultural heritage and our own health and well-being. Sadly, only 2% of people in Great Britain can truly experience a dark sky at night. We all have a role to play in not just keeping dark skies dark but also reducing light pollution in urban areas. This talk will look at why our dark skies are important, what light pollution is, how we can all make positive changes.
Expert Hour is our take on Ted Talks, tucked away in our Secret Cinema. Each one-hour talk is given by a member of your local community, discussing their niche and interesting specialism. ‘Experts’ are picked by our volunteer panel, which means every talk is guaranteed to be absolutely fascinating.
The best bit? It only costs £1 for a seat!

About the Speaker – Leanne Parr
Leanne Parr, a Gregson Centre volunteer is the Planning Officer at landscape charity Friends of the Lake District. The charity provides advice to those who want to reduce light pollution and support dark skies. Leanne has a masters degree in Civic Design and has worked in the planning sector for over 20 years, producing and implementing policies relating to dark skies and light pollution for several local planning authorities.
