Expert Hour- The Secret Social Lives of Eels

Expert Hour- The Secret Social Lives of Eels

Expert Hour- The Secret Social Lives of Eels

21 January 2027 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

All ages

European eels are among the most mysterious animals on Earth. They migrate thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, yet much of their behaviour remains unknown. This talk will explore how researchers are uncovering the hidden lives of these fascinating fish using high-resolution acoustic telemetry whilst they are living in freshwater reservoirs. These artificial environments can trap eels for years, or even decades, creating a unique opportunity to study how they move, interact, and share space with one another. The talk will share insights from the speaker’s PhD research at Lancaster University, explaining how they track individual eels and what they’re learning about their behaviour in these unusual habitats. Along the way, we’ll discover why eels are so remarkable, why their populations have declined so dramatically, and why understanding their behaviour matters and could contribute to future conservation efforts.

Molly Fowkes is a PhD researcher at Lancaster University studying the social behaviour of the critically endangered European eel. Her research uses high-resolution acoustic telemetry and social network analysis to investigate how eels interact and share space within freshwater habitats. Originally from Derbyshire, Molly is passionate about helping people discover the fascinating aquatic wildlife found here in the UK and loves to share that with anyone who will listen. Alongside her research, she works to make marine science more accessible to wider audiences, including delivering sessions in care homes that introduce people to diving, conservation, and experiencing the marine environment when otherwise restricted or unable to do so. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, and whether in the field, at her desk, or online, Molly is committed to inspiring others to appreciate and protect the remarkable aquatic ecosystems that exist right on our doorsteps.
